Jake's Weekly Flow #44

Weekly Flow #44 - November 4th, 2023

Dear, Dragon Flies

Welcome to my weekly flow of news, events, insightful perspectives, and impactful stories aimed at creating positive change in your life and the lives you touch, at home and on the road.

My curious mind, intuitive soul, and big heart, along with some personal connections and crushes on extraordinary humans have put me in a position to receive an abundance of practical information, exciting innovation, and profound wisdom, usually travel-related, that has flowed to me, and now, on to you. Before you scan, take a breath, tune in, open up to the flow, and find your glow.

  • It is World Kindness Week, which given the state of affairs, the wars, the unrest and that destabilizing feeling that many of us are dealing with, it is more important than ever to inject hope, love, and light into your day. Perhaps instead of going into Netflix, Hulu, or Prime TV, consider Conscious Good TV - Inspiring and uplifting films from the world’s finest filmmakers.

  • I found this quite stimulating … Strange blobs in Earth’s mantle are relics of a massive collision. “Impact with a body called Theia 4.5 billion years ago left remnants deep inside Earth — and also created the Moon!”

  • Wow, Greater Good Science Center sent this out this week to help us all deal with the endless bombardment of disheartening news …

    • “Our Greater Good in Action (GGIA) Fierce Self-Compassion Break can be a powerful tool to cultivate the clarity and courage needed to shield ourselves from harm, allowing us to navigate the complexities of the world. Also particularly suited for our times is this Common Humanity Meditation by Sean Fargo, to bring to mind someone who may seem distant or different from you, and wish them well. Or you might consider giving this GGIA Expressive Writing practice a try, while thinking: ‘‘What am I called to do right now?’

  • Now this is adventure … a look back at transformational travel from a bygone era. Thank you, Annie for this share.

  • If you’ve made it this far down this list, I am passing on a very special treat for you. Thank you to my dear friend Lindsay for sending this to me. She’s amidst a transformation of self, as am I, and this brought me to tears.  Two minutes that will change how you see your struggles, your suffering, your current state, and the opportunity we always have to begin again, with more vibrancy, more beauty, more potential and even some wings to fly. Maybe this is what our society is going through right now, maybe we are all going through something like a Metamorphosis of a dragonfly I will hang on to this each and every day, I invite you to do as well. This is what our work at the Transformational Travel Council is all about.

Author William Martin on the wonders of ordinary life:
"Do not ask your children
to strive for extraordinary lives.
Such striving may seem admirable,
but it is the way of foolishness.
Help them instead to find the wonder
and the marvel of an ordinary life.
Show them the joy of tasting
tomatoes, apples and pears.
Show them how to cry
when pets and people die.
Show them the infinite pleasure
in the touch of a hand.
And make the ordinary come alive for them.
The extraordinary will take care of itself."

Last, an exercise for you … I did this on the Walking Mentorship trip on the Camino de Santiago. Take 10-20 minutes (or longer) this weekend and have a conversation with the version of you 20 years in the future. Sit with your future self, imagine what you look like, what are you wearing, where do you live, what does the air feel like, what is happening in the world, and then embody your future self and write a letter to your who you are today, from the heart, try to let it flow, don’t overthink it.  What would they have to say to you today? What’s working, what’s not, and what to expect in the next 20 years, how can you become the dragon fly that you are 20 years from now.

It’s been a very challenging year for me, for many of us, it’s a tough time to be alive, to witness things so painful that we can’t even begin to understand how any of it is possible.  Thanks for giving me the space to read, write, reflect, and share with you each week. I truly hope it helps you find some peace, appreciate the beauty around us, stoke your imagination, and let your love light shine bright.

Brightly,
