Introducing The Unpacking Us Initiative

The Transformational Travel Council Launches Initiative Exploring Intersections Of Travel And Racism, Equity, Inclusion, And Healing.

SEATTLE — November 23rd, 2021 -The Transformational Travel Council (TTC) is proud and excited to announce the launch of the “Unpacking Us Initiative.” This initiative seeks to explore the intersections of travel as a practice and as an industry with racial healing, equity, inclusion, and integration of human consciousness. The TTC’s hope is to bring travel and tourism into its right place as a venue for fundamental shifts in how we see and interact with each other. Travel can support our healing from all forms of oppression when done mindfully.

Since its inception in 2016, the TTC has launched the world’s first Transformation Design Course, the Transformative Destination Program, and has grown it’s Allyship to over 300 members. “With the Unpacking Us Initiative, we hope to spark conversation and explore the intersections of all of these important topics within an industry that frankly has a lot of work to do in this space.” says Tanner Colton, Director of Design & Innovation for the TTC.

With in-person workshops, online events, on-demand courses, and customized corporate training and workshops, the Unpacking Us Initiative will seek to meet travelers and industry professionals where they are and provide the tools they need. “Each conversation is an opportunity.” says Jackie Roby, the TTC Head of Marketing & Sales Strategy and co-creator of the initiative. “After all this time apart, why not come together and have meaningful, heartfelt discussions that can change our world for the better?”

The TTC collaborates with leading DEI organizations to create robust and powerful opportunities for learning and growth.

The TTC is honored to have developed this initiative with The Soul Focused Group (SFG), whose unique approach to racial healing and growth align with the TTC emphasizing the need in the travel space for increased understanding. With decades of innovative work in the anti-racist and racial healing space, the SFG is unique and different from almost all other DEI organizations.

“The TTC is known to do all of their work through the lens of Social Justice and entering into travel from a place of respect and the honoring of humanity.” says Martin Friedman, Strategic Projects Coordinator and Senior Consultant at the SFG. The importance of this intersectional work is clear to Friedman who says, “Oppression and travel have been permanently linked.  Unfortunately this attitude still exists today… We all need to collectively heal from all that history.  As we heal, we will see ourselves everywhere we travel and in everyone we meet.”

To launch the Initiative, the TTC is hosting a Holiday Workshop focused on navigating the opportunity for meaningful conversations with family and friends as we travel for the holidays.

On December 15th, 2021 the TTC will be hosting “Healing During the Holidays,” a two-hour virtual workshop aimed at exploring the opportunity for meaningful connections with family and friends during the holidays and how to navigate sometimes difficult topics toward healing and compassion. This workshop will seek to give a few simple tools as well as provide a space for discussion and conversation around how to turn something that is at times scary and awkward into something powerful and meaningful. “We are undoing centuries worth of conditioning telling us to avoid certain topics, when we can prepare to have them thoughtfully and with care for each other.”  says Roby. “Healing During the Holidays is an invitation to open our minds, speak from our hearts, and listen with curiosity to better understand one another.”
