Jake's Weekly Flow # 7

Weekly Flow #7 | February 17, 2023

Greetings, fellow seeker

Welcome to my weekly flow of news, events, insightful perspectives, and impactful stories aimed at creating positive change in your life and the lives you touch, at home and on the road.

My curious mind, intuitive soul, and big heart, along with some personal connections and crushes on extraordinary humans have put me in a position to receive an abundance of practical information, exciting innovation, and deep wisdom, usually travel-related, that has flowed to me, and now, on to you. Before you scan, take a breath, tune in, open up to the flow, and find your glow.

  • The most mysterious star in the universe - a compelling TedTalk by Tabetha Bovajian (Aliens!)

  • This really resonated with me, it is hard for me to say no, but I am getting better! Why I Stopped Taking Pick Your Brain Meetings, by Dan Pontefract

  • Curious about the intersection of destinations, transformational travel, and regenerative development? You're invited to hear me, Sherrye Wyatt of Whidbey and Camano Islands Tourism, Krista Loercher of Whidbey Island Kayaking Co., and Mona Campbell of Canopy Tours Northwest talk about the TTC's year-long 'Destination Regeneration' Program they just completed? Thursday, Feb 23rd at 10a PST - Register

  • The Climate Pledges of Leading Global Companies Don’t Add Up - Proving yet again that transformation is the missing link in our social and environmental movements. “You can take a horse to water, but you can’t make them drink.” Renewing your relationship with nature will cultivate more stewards and guardians of the wild. Why, because they care, not because they are guilted, shamed, or scared into changing.

  • Looking for a messenger? Animals in nature always have a message for us, start noticing what animals show in your life and when. Sign up for a course on ‘How to communicate with animals.’ Thank you, DailyOM for bringing so much light into my life.

  • It is only beautiful if it takes your breath away … Wildlife encounters tend to do that, check out these dolphins communicating with a paddle boarder and how alive he feels!

  • Problem: What’s to become of humans? Thanks to my pal and business partner, Corey Weathers, at ROAM Beyond, solar-powered mobile cabins in Montana, for this dark and depressing read. ;) But don’t worry, I am sharing a solution below … Hint: Stop believing humans and nature are separate.

An Ethics of Wild Mind

An Interview with David Hinton - I hope you have a listen to this one!

“In this conversation, poet, translator, and author David Hinton calls for a radical reweaving of mind and land. Tracing the shifts in human consciousness that distanced us from nature, he draws on Tao and Ch’an Buddhist philosophy in an effort to help us navigate the sixth extinction with ethics tempered by love.” - Emergence Magazine (Sign up for this!)

“Winter is a kind of pregnant emptiness. Spring emerges out of that—it flourishes. And life flourishes in summer and then dies back into that emptiness of winter. And you realize, oh, my thoughts are doing the same thing that the ten thousand things do—they’re part of the same tissue ... And so that’s another radical reweaving of consciousness and wildness—what I mean by “wild mind.” - David Hinton

On a personal note, this last weekend, someone mentioned that it is hard to imagine, maybe even irresponsible to bring new humans into this world due to the fear of the climate crisis. While I completely understand, the most beautiful things in my life, are my kiddos (Yes, they often take my breath away) And this week, we celebrated my son Quinn’s 15th birthday! We talked about having only 4 more Summers together, and we were both choked up a bit. It’s heartbreaking to me that the fear of climate catastrophes will deprive those who want children of such a beautiful human experience. It’s not fair.

Photo below of my favorite things … Quinn and Olive.

Have an inspired week filled with many mindful moments.
